Data shows that Gen Z is moving from conducting their searches on Google to TikTok. In this episode, I’ll explore TikTok and some of what they have to offer. From their unsecure privacy policy to the online challenges kids watch and perform on the social media platform, and from posts about eating disorders to posts about sexual abuse, this platform is really dangerous for young adults.
Google has identified TikTok as a possible existential threat to its search engine. Almost 40% of young people use TikTok or Instagram to discover places rather than using Google Maps or Search. This article looks at TikTok as a search engine and how it performs against Google Search. While TikTok excels at showing content related to searches, it isn’t able to provide quick access to other sites or answer questions like Google. I’ve tested this theory myself, but I don’t believe that TikTok has a better search engine. Google is far from perfect either.
Read TikTok’s privacy policy and spend some time on it. Their safety center is a joke! It just links to other exterior resources. For kids under 18, this is a disaster. So much misinformation!
The algorithm doesn’t reward creators for accurate or valuable content, instead they are rewarded for obscene posts. Keep an eye on online challenges, eating disorders, bullying, suicide, sexual abuse, and more.
They even state these dangers for kids under 18 in their privacy policy. The Chinese government has access to all their data.
